~ Stairs & Hardwoods ~

Stairs and matching hardwood floors are one of the main items for setting the mood of most homes. They are usually the first impression a visitor has of your home and should be used to compliment the furniture and style of the formal rooms. We offer stairs and hard wood floors in any species or combination of species and either as separate parts or fully installed.
Construction:
The construction is the most important step in picking out a staircase. Our closed stringer staircases are a mortise design. A mortise design is the strongest and most rigid design. This design has the profile of the treads, nosing, and risers mortised into a finished stringer. Extra room is left for wedges to be driven and glued in between the stringer and the treads and risers. This supports the tread on its four outside corners to overcome the "rocking effect" which is the most common cause of problems. Our open stringers are cut in our shop to ensure a tight fit and by the use of glue blocks, mitered joints and dados we can obtain a rigid stair. We use these different design in our construction to help ensure a neat and squeak-free staircase.

Style:
The staircase should be considered as a piece of furniture and the same amount of thought should be given to the style, species of wood and quality of construction that your favorite piece of furniture did. The stair case is an area that can make a statement and be the difference between a really nice home and a stunning home.

Parts:
Below is a drawing showing the most common stair parts, their location and use. Post to post construction is depicted on the left hand side of the lower landing with the hand rail originating from one newel and ending in the next newel. Over the post construction depicted on right hand side of the staircase with the handrail originating on top of the first newel and continuing over the other. An open stringer is the board on the outside of the stairs with the horizontal cuts that the treads go over and the vertical cuts are mitered to eccept the risers. The lower three flights of staircase are all open stringer design. A closed stringer, usually against the wall, is a stringer that is higher than the treads and with a straight edge that runs parallel to the angle of the stairs. The top flight of stairs in the drawing has both an open stringer, left side and a closed stringer, right side. The sketch below shows the name given to different stair parts and their most common locations on a staircase. These parts can be ordered in any style and material.
